About Doorman

Doorman is a New Orleans-based furniture brand offering handmade, uniquely Southern, high-quality pieces for the home, directly to consumers online. Each piece is conceptualized by founder Alex Geriner and handcrafted by Alex and his skillful team of woodworkers and experienced artisans.

With an emphasis on sustainability and preservation, Doorman uses a variety of materials found throughout the Gulf South, including reclaimed woods and architectural salvage - much of which comes from the remnants of homes that were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Each design, along with its materials, tells a different story, keeping the history of the idiosyncratic city alive and evoking a sense of place.

Over the years, Doorman has collaborated with designers on custom projects, furnishing boutique hotels, restaurants, and residential projects alike. From custom sizing to particular materials and finishes, Doorman is willing to explore bespoke requests to achieve the design vision. Based on the specific job, scope of the project and timeline, Doorman will carefully review each custom job and commission and accept them on a case-by-case basis.

The headboard that started it all.

In 2008, Alex moved to New Orleans and rented his first adult apartment in a historic 1800s home. He said goodbye to his abused, college-life furniture, and took a stab at making a bed for himself. The city was still reeling from the hurricane, when he found a beautiful old door salvaged from a small shotgun home that flooded during Katrina.

Once cleaned up, he inlaid the panels with decorative ceiling tin from a store front just off Magazine Street. Not long after, a friend saw the headboard and wanted one of her own.

Flash forward ten years, and Doorman has built furniture for homes all over the world, from Australia to China to penthouses in New York City.

Alex
Owner / Founder / Creative Director

โ€œI donโ€™t have a degree in design and I never went to school for woodworking. What I did was dream, learn and create. Iโ€™ve had this vision since I was a kid and Iโ€™m always excited to see what unfolds next.โ€

Alex Geriner is the founder, owner and creative director of Doorman. Born and raised in southern Louisiana by a mother in the furniture industry and a father with a sharp mind for engineering, Alex had a penchant for building from a young age.

After graduating from college in Mississippi, Alex returned to his home state and moved to New Orleans. With a limited post-graduate budget for furnishing his 1880s era apartment, Alex took matters into his own hands and decided to create his own.

His first piece was an antique headboard, which he crafted from a five-panel door (hence Doorman) salvaged from a home flooded by Hurricane Katrina, inlaying the old growth cypress panels with ornate, 19th century tin. Word spread and Alex began building and selling more beds, slowly growing his operation and expanding offerings to include a wide range of hand-crafted product, including lighting, tables, chairs and more.

Realizing his unique position in being able to offer quality, stylish pieces that embodied the charm and grit of the Crescent City, Alex officially launched Doorman Designs in January 2013. Originally coined Doorman Designs, the brand is now just simply โ€œDoormanโ€ over five years later, encompassing a lifestyle and appreciation for American-made design, along with the various, emerging collaborations and custom projects Alex has in the works.

See the Workshop

In the fall of 2019, Doorman opened their new workshop along the Mississippi River in the Algiers Point Historic District, moving from their original Riverbend workshop, where they first opened their doors in 2013. The new space on the Westbank of New Orleans had been vacant since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In 2020, Doorman installed solar panels on their roof, becoming 75-90% reliant on solar energy. The team transformed a space that didn't have its lights on since Katrina to one that is powered by the sun and operating as sustainably as possible.
